Our first seminar:  Cornas Masterclass.  One of the Rhône Valley's most captivating expressions of Syrah, Cornas has been enjoying a renaissance over the last decade.  Thierry Allemand provided a grower's perspective on the appellation and its wine, while relative newcomers, Yes Cuilleron of Les Vins De Vienne explained what drew him to this region as negociant.  Cornas grows all syrah and is east by south east facing.  It has granite soil and is the southern most area of the northern rhône region.  In Celtic, Cornas means burnt earth.

Les Vins de Vienne buys four different wines and then blends to produce their wine.  They use 50% new wood.

Thierry grows their own grapes, bottles 3 different wines and uses no new wood.

The seminar moderator was Ehren Jordan.

The wines we tasted in this seminar:
Les Vins de Vienne, Cornas 2000:  Very fruity nose, lots of red raspberry, jammy.  Light on the flavor.
Les Vins de Vienne, Cornas 2001:  Slightly less jammy nose than the '00.  Little more fruit on the palate.

Thierry Allemand, Cornas 2000 Reynard:  Eucalyptus on the nose.  Minty, almost medicinal flavor.
Thierry Allemand, Cornas 2000 No Sulfur Cuvée:  Similar nose to the other Thierry wine, but slightly stronger.  Green olive scent; red fruit flavor was more pronounced.
